There are also 60 pages of appendices. \n\nThe division of librarians’ roles into synergists, sentries, educators, managers, and astronauts is a helpful framework for categorizing the various implications of AI in the library field. The background information on Artificial Intelligence in the first half of the book is very detailed with helpful examples, but it occasionally assumes the reader has a computer background rather than a librarian background, such as when it uses the OCR acronym before explaining it (p. 230).","accuracy_rating":5,"accuracy_review":"The content combines research from multiple sources to give the most accurate picture of the current field.","relevance_rating":4,"relevance_review":"The topic is one that is rapidly changing and could make the text obsolete quickly. The book frequently mentions the publishing year, recommends articles that it calls “recent”, and makes predictions about how AI will change in the future. For example, on page 107, Frické writes, “At present, June 2023, there are only research instances of Switch Transformers.” However, the topic necessitates that there will be regular updates to this book and the book is more useful for being current at the publication date.","clarity_rating":4,"clarity_review":"Most of the book is accessible with analogies and the author’s personal experiences to illuminate particularly difficult AI concepts. The text often abruptly changes topics, so the reader must rely on the headings to understand the topic flow. However, Chapter 00 is especially abrupt and uses more academic vocabulary.","consistency_rating":5,"consistency_review":"The text is consistent. It introduces a large amount of AI terminology, and then continues to use those terms after explaining them.","modularity_rating":5,"modularity_review":"The headings and subheadings are extremely organized and detailed making it easy for a professor to distinguish which sections to assign and helping a student know where to find background information for specific questions. The headings are part of the content and are essential to understanding it.","organization_rating":5,"organization_review":"The flow of the content could be confusing if the reader skims over the headings. Topic changes can seem abrupt. However, the organization makes sense if the reader takes the time to look over the Table of Contents and read the headings.","interface_rating":5,"interface_review":"Artificial Intelligence and Librarianship is available via PDF and Microsoft Word, and neither have any interface issues. PDF allowed one to read it easily on a mobile device and add highlights and comments.","grammatical_rating":4,"grammatical_review":"There are frequent sentence fragments which are perhaps a stylistic choice of the author. There is a spelling error (p. 266) and a run-on sentence (p.288). The author frequently makes asides or uses idioms, making the text somewhat more informal.","cultural_rating":5,"cultural_review":"The book discusses guarding against bias in AI such as bank loan algorithms which could favor a specific race or language that often assumes gender for various jobs. While personal examples are infrequent, the examples do display people from a variety of countries.","overall_rating":9,"overall_review":"Artificial Intelligence and Librarianship: Notes for Teaching provides a needed resource for a new and exciting subject that does not have much material written for it. While the text is well-researched and written for understanding, the sheer volume of information covered in the book can be overwhelming for readers. Dividing the book into volumes or parts, such as a historical overview in Part 1 and practical guidelines on usage in Part 2, could help mitigate this overwhelming feeling. This structure would provide clearer delineation between topics and make it easier for readers to navigate the wealth of information presented. Overall, despite the potential for overwhelm, the book offers valuable insights into the intersection of AI and librarianship.","consistency_rating":5,"consistency_review":"Consistency in terminology and definitions is a notable strength of \"Librarianship in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.\" The text maintains a clear and cohesive language style, ensuring that readers consistently encounter familiar terms and concepts throughout the book. The five chapters cover the primary elements students should be considering as they become proficient in locating, evaluating, and using information. Being a student centered textbook, I can understand why there isn't any mention of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy or a specific section that discusses why this book was created, but these are elements that would be helpful for instructors using this textbook outside of the institution. Additionally, as this appears to be for a specific course, including a glossary of terms would be helpful as a reference. While definitions are provided throughout each chapter, they can get lost in the text.","accuracy_rating":5,"accuracy_review":"The content appears to be accurate, error-free and unbiased. Any included references were relevant and functioned properly. I appreciated that, in the section concerning Wikipedia, the authors did address the issue that the majority of editors are male and there are inherent biases and exclusions in those articles.","relevance_rating":5,"relevance_review":"Given that these chapters cover topics with a general approach, it is unlikely that this content will be obsolete in the near future. However, some of the images from the institution's interface may become outdated.","clarity_rating":5,"clarity_review":"The authors clearly define concepts and terms, and provide excellent examples throughout. Some of these examples, however, may edge into the overwhelming for novice researchers. A particular example is the graphic provided in the Boolean Operators section, 3.2. The very detailed search example (that includes AND, OR, and NOT with nesting) is simultaneously effective and a lot to take in. I very much appreciated their approach of including \"strengths\" and \"weaknesses\" at the end of certain section; this summarized information very concisely and helps demonstrate that there isn't one source or tool that is perfect.","consistency_rating":5,"consistency_review":"Despite being written and compiled by the Library Instruction Services unit, this book manages to have a consistent voice and approach to how each chapter and subsequent section is presented.","modularity_rating":5,"modularity_review":"Keeping to 5 chapters with quick subsections makes this book easy to use and read, either as a professor assigning work or a student using it as a resource. The sections are, for the most part, very reasonable in length, and the ones that verge on being too long are appropriately divided. I did not find the text to be disruptive.","organization_rating":5,"organization_review":"The book is thoughtfully organized with a clear and simple structure. The order of the chapters is logical and follows a typical research process.","interface_rating":5,"interface_review":"No issues noted with the interface. The occasional “check your understanding” quizzes were very effective and added to the overall experience of using the textbook online.","grammatical_rating":5,"grammatical_review":"I did not note any grammatical errors during my review of the text.","cultural_rating":4,"cultural_review":"The text did not appear to be culturally insensitive or offensive in any way. Generally, all their examples and screenshots were very generic and represented authors from different backgrounds and fields of study. However, there is certainly opportunity to provide more inclusive examples or to discuss critical information literacy and social justice.","overall_rating":10,"overall_review":"Overall, a good resource for an introductory college research course. It is simple in its approach, which makes the material approachable for novice researchers. For instructors not at the home institution wanting to use this book, certain sections may be confusing for students given the very specific screenshots, but this is expected given it’s attachment to the 160 course offered at Iowa State University. It would be useful to have more details about the course itself and the institution, as well as the makeup of the Instruction Services team that authored this source.","created_at":"2021-09-28T18:32:18.000-05:00","updated_at":"2021-09-28T18:32:18.000-05:00"},{"id":33545,"first_name":"Meridith","last_name":"Wolnick","position":"Director of Teaching and Learning","institution_name":"University of Virginia","comprehensiveness_rating":5,"comprehensiveness_review":"Library 160: Introduction to College-Level Research is written for students attending a particular course at Iowa State University. It has a full table of contents and is easy to navigate. Sections are short and include clearly labeled subsections. While there is no index, the linked table of contents handily provides user-friendly navigation.","accuracy_rating":4,"accuracy_review":"Generally, the text is accurate and unbiased. However, Web Search Engines are incorrectly identified as not having filters for advanced search or narrowing a search (Table 2.1, pg. 28). In the case of Google, there is a capacity for advanced search, searches can be narrowed by time, and images can be narrowed by type of image, usage rights, etc. This is something the authors acknowledge further in the text (Section 4.6, pg. 129).","relevance_rating":5,"relevance_review":"The content is up-to-date and relevant to today’s readers. The text does link to tutorials and other resources from other universities. Given that those links are out of the hands of the authors and ISU, broken links may go unnoticed. Additionally, there are several figures that look like they are from the ISU Library catalog. While those helpfully illustrate the text, they may become dated as web pages change. That said, given their placement in the text, updates should be easy to make.","clarity_rating":4,"clarity_review":"The text is clear and terms are defined for those new to the concepts. Each chapter includes learning outcomes that are achieved by the end of the chapter. Terms (like 'popular information' and 'peer review') are well-defined with examples. However, the use of bolding for terminology is not consistent throughout the book. Some terms (like 'thesis' and 'finding tools') are bolded and explained but others (like 'item records' and 'DOI') are just explained, not bolded. It also would be helpful to have bolded terms and concepts in a central list in the book for easy reference. In Section 1.4 (pg. 8), it’s not clear by Books whether the authors are referring to scholarly books or all books. Section 3.3 covering nesting and Boolean operators was complex compared to the rest of the text. It was helpful when the text differentiated between the ISU Quick Search function and a search engine. For instance, when discussing Boolean operators, the text identifies how to do a search similar to Quick Search in Google using a – instead of NOT.","consistency_rating":5,"consistency_review":"The text is consistently written and cohesive.","modularity_rating":5,"modularity_review":"The text is logically divided, and individual sections can be assigned independently. Sections are generally small and concise, easy to take in and understand. Page numbers did not consistently appear in the downloaded PDF.","organization_rating":5,"organization_review":"The flow of the text is logical. The sequence of the sections, particularly illustrating the steps in beginning the research process, are clear and aligned with the student experience. The sections on Keywords are particularly organized and well-defined.","interface_rating":4,"interface_review":"Navigation throughout the text is easy and logical. A few things I noted that could be improved: Figure 1.1 on page 10 in the section defining journal articles/issues/volumes is mid-quality and not ultimately necessary for the text since it is well explained in the preceding section. It may become dated since the journal clearly shows publication dates.","grammatical_rating":5,"grammatical_review":"I didn’t observe any grammatical errors.","cultural_rating":5,"cultural_review":"While the examples used throughout the text assume some knowledge about the United States, they are inclusive and cover a wide range of topics. Since the book is clearly written specifically for ISU students, reliance on U.S. concepts is less of an issue. The sub-section on outdated and offensive subject headings (pg. 80) was a helpful addition to the text.","overall_rating":9,"overall_review":"This text is written for students early in their college careers. It would be useful for any student undertaking academic research for the first time. The text adds helpful sections that go beyond basic research skills, such as the Did You Know section (pg. 30) about free accounts. There are interactive checks for understanding that are relevant to the subject matter being reviewed. They include the opportunity to retry if answered incorrectly and give immediate feedback to the student. In the PDF, the checks are labeled “An Interactive H5P element” which may cause a student who is unfamiliar with H5P to avoid clicking.","created_at":"2021-12-16T09:33:04.000-06:00","updated_at":"2021-12-16T09:33:04.000-06:00"},{"id":33724,"first_name":"Stefania","last_name":"Hiltgen","position":"Public Services Librarian at Newberry College","institution_name":"Newberry College","comprehensiveness_rating":5,"comprehensiveness_review":"This book goes into great detail and includes modern research concepts such as using Wikipedia for background information and how to search Google.","accuracy_rating":5,"accuracy_review":"I found no issues with accuracy.","relevance_rating":5,"relevance_review":"The length was just right-not exhaustive, but inclusive of all topics needed to understand how to conduct modern-day research.","clarity_rating":5,"clarity_review":"It also includes a helpful Glossary.","consistency_rating":5,"consistency_review":"It is consistent in the terminology it uses.","modularity_rating":5,"modularity_review":"It is organized in good-sized chunks.","organization_rating":4,"organization_review":"The fluid nature of research makes organizing it a little difficult. I wish they also adapted more visual learners by providing some linked videos or something akin to that. I also wish that the book had a print version that I could have at hand and offer students if they expressed any interest in learning more. Some students have come to me before asking for print copies of their books, and it would be nice to have a print copy at hand for students to pick up and look through.\r\n\r\nThe sections on teaching students strengths and weaknesses of each information source helps tremendously as well. Adapting this text book would require substantial editing. For example, some screen grabs are from ISU's specific search interface, record examples and unique “pay for” tools like Map It and Get It. But explanation of Library of Congress call numbers is quite good.","relevance_rating":4,"relevance_review":"Content is up-to-date. Again, using ISU's specific website to illustrate content may prove problematic in the future. Likewise, the database search pages change not infrequently and may not reflect what students see when they login to their own school's library page.","clarity_rating":5,"clarity_review":"One of the strengths of Library 160 is the way in which it is written. The language used is accessible and friendly. I made note of several \"real world\" examples (like avoiding \"BS\") that help make the content real to students.","consistency_rating":5,"consistency_review":"Library 160 does an excellent job using terminology consistently. One issue with information literacy classes is the lack of standard terms. For instance, faculty often use phrases like \"scholarly articles,” \"academic journals,” and \"peer reviewed sources,\" interchangeably, which can be confusing for students new to the research process. Also, between disciplines what constitutes a primary source can vary. This textbook explains all of the \"jargon\" and offers clear visuals as to how the terms interrelate.","modularity_rating":5,"modularity_review":"As mentioned above, the 5 chapters are each divided into smaller sub-sections. The Table of Contents is always on the left side of the screen, making it easy to move around between sections or return to previously covered content. Moving between pages is also straightforward--the arrows at the bottom of the screen show what's \"previous\" and what's \"next.\"","organization_rating":5,"organization_review":"Overall, the organization of Library 160 makes sense. However, the early mentions of \"how to cite\" work represent something of an issue. Ethical information use is covered in the last chapter book, but opportunities for additional coverage abound. The style guides (MLA, APA, Chicago) are only just mentioned. Likewise, fair use, copyright, plagiarism are all addressed but only in most generic terms.","interface_rating":5,"interface_review":"The interface is fantastic! There are a lot of great visuals (bullet points, charts, graphs) and several embedded YouTube videos break up large sections of text. Plus, there are quizzes to check understanding. Yay quizzes!","grammatical_rating":5,"grammatical_review":"I did not find any grammatical errors. At first, the use of the second person \"You\" seemed too informal for a textbook, but by the end of the book, it felt collaborative as \"you\" can be singular or plural--\"you\" the individual student as well as \"you\" all the students in this class.","cultural_rating":5,"cultural_review":"There is one curse word in this book (BS), but in context and with a solid reason. I was surprised to see it, but not offended.","overall_rating":9,"overall_review":"At the very end of Library 160, there is a small section on \"Promoting Yourself as a Student Researcher.\" The idea of sharing student work through scholarly channels and encouraging students to think about themselves as “student researchers” is a powerful one. More energy should devoted to that concept in information literacy instruction. Too often students feel like they're just “pretending” to be scholars. Perhaps Library 160 can help change that!","created_at":"2022-11-07T16:12:33.000-06:00","updated_at":"2022-11-07T16:12:33.000-06:00"},{"id":34243,"first_name":"Rachel","last_name":"Milani","position":"Assistant Librarian","institution_name":"Minnesota North College","comprehensiveness_rating":5,"comprehensiveness_review":"This textbook comprehensively covers the research process in a concise, comprehensible format that should be easily understood by students at the community college level. This book additionally provides information on ethical use of information, resources for students who wish to learn how to develop a citation, and a brief overview of how research fits into the overall writing process. I also like that this book introduces the SIFT method and explains why the CRAAP method may no longer be the most effective evaluation tool. One critique would be that this book fails to mention that students should cite their sources as they find them so that they can more easily find those sources again if necessary and more effectively prevent plagiarism. Understanding when a source requires citation is one thing, but students often leave citing those sources until the very end of the writing process, which can lead to confusion and errors in citations.","accuracy_rating":5,"accuracy_review":"Content within this text is accurate and unbiased.","relevance_rating":5,"relevance_review":"While this book was written for a specific institution and program, this text makes an effort to generalize certain topics (like database availability and selection) to be broadly applicable to other institutions that might utilize different platforms and tools or have other options available. This book seems to be most relevant to an undergraduate \"Introduction to College\" course or to segments of a Freshman Composition course. That said, this book could also easily be incorporated into other courses that assign research papers.","clarity_rating":5,"clarity_review":"Again, this textbook comprehensively covers the research process in a concise, comprehensible format that should be easily understood by students at the community college level. It would be useful to provide more of a critical framework for students to explore pros and cons of various approaches, instead of feeding them opinions (some of which do not represent the consensus of experts in this profession). \n\nIt should be noted that the author used ChatGPT to write some of this book (chapter 12, AI section). It demands reflection on what is being accessed (and what is not), who is gaining access (and who is not), who is providing access (and who is not), and what the goal is of this access (and what lies beyond access).\"—from the Foreword by Rajiv S. Jhangiani Information literacy skills are key when finding, using, adapting, and producing open educational resources (OER). Educators who wish to include OER for their students need to be able to find these resources and use them according to their permissions. When open pedagogical methods are employed, students need to be able to use information literacy skills as they compile, reuse, and create open resources. Intersections of Open Educational Resources and Information Literacy captures current open education and information literacy theory and practice and provides inspiration for the future. Chapters include practical applications, theoretical musings, literature reviews, and case studies and discuss social justice issues, collaboration, open pedagogy, training, and advocacy. The book is divided into six parts: Foundations Teaching Info Lit with OER Librarian Support of Open Pedagogy/OER Social Justice/Untold Stories Student Advocacy Spreading the Love: Training Future Advocates and Practitioners Chapters cover topics including library-led OER creation; digital cultural heritage and the intersections of primary source literacy and information literacy; situated learning and open pedagogy; critical librarianship and open education; and developing student OER leaders. This book is divided into six parts that will walk the reader through the beginnings of this partnership up to the prospects of future advocates. Each chapter can stand alone, but work together to provide an overview of the important part librarians play in bringing OER to the forefront. I enjoyed reading perspectives from differing authors and their experiences and there is something here for both the novice and the more experienced user of Open Education.","accuracy_rating":5,"accuracy_review":"I found the information to be unbiased, accurate and error-free. A read through of the authors shows the overwhelming amount of expertise that is being tapped into throughout this text.","relevance_rating":5,"relevance_review":"There is no doubt that Open Education will be relevant in the future as will the task of keeping students and faculty skilled in the art of navigating Open Educational Resources. I do not see this text being obsolete within a short period of time. The format makes for an easy update if need be.","clarity_rating":5,"clarity_review":"The first chapter was born out of the reasoning that some readers \"may be new to the concepts of open education, open educational resources, open pedagogy, and information literacy. Key Takeaways that clarified points were offered in some chapters. All while being an appropriate read for those in higher education.","consistency_rating":5,"consistency_review":"This text was consistent in its mission to drive home the importance of Open Education. Chapters are in an appropriate order and chapters are, for the most part, short and easy to read. The only minor inconsistencies were in how individual authors chose to wrap up their sections, some did conclusions while others offered key takeaways. It would have been nice to have key takeaways from each author.","modularity_rating":5,"modularity_review":"As someone with a reasonable amount of knowledge regarding OER, I appreciated the variety of authors and being able to skip around and read those areas of interest without having to do so in order. The layout was easily defined and generally good overall.","organization_rating":5,"organization_review":"Each of the six parts were clearly defined as to what would be included in them as well as who the author was. The arrangement is logical, but as stated in the foreword \"most chapters could easily have fit into two or three different sections...\".","interface_rating":5,"interface_review":"There we no interface issues with downloading this text on the computer or iphone. Navigation was actually smoother on my phone than on the computer. The only other option available besides PDF was the option of a hardcopy which I found a little pricey at $100.80 for an ALA member.","grammatical_rating":5,"grammatical_review":"I truly enjoyed reading the differing experiences of the authors and reread chapters more than one time. There were no noted grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors.","cultural_rating":5,"cultural_review":"I did not come across any cultural or gender bias in this book. In addition, several of the authors relate their experiences with creating OER, using it in a class, and the impact on student learning. This diversion points to a move away from rote learning in traditional education and towards mindful, self-directed learning facilitated by faculty utilizing OER. OER is open and the texts do not have a cost for students, which is a major boon to students who would be otherwise unable to succeed in college due to high textbook costs. The authors note that most of the discussion around OER addresses cost and access. However, OER provides opportunities for improved learning, including allowing students to direct their learning, make connections in learning, create content, and develop information literacy skills that will serve them well. OER could also provide for the differing learning styles of students. In addition, OER allows faculty to utilize resources and materials that are more inclusive and diverse in viewpoint, something which is impossible with a traditional textbook.\r\n\r\nThe only omission in this text that I can see is that accessibility of OER for the disabled is not even mentioned until page 43. Accessibility is important for all students in higher education, some of whom may have undiagnosed disabilities or not wish to disclose them. I also spotted some accessibility issues with the text itself.","accuracy_rating":4,"accuracy_review":"This text is a compilation of chapters written by different authors from a variety of viewpoints. I see no obvious biases, and in fact, the variety of viewpoints and topics represented points to an effort to make the text as diverse as possible. The only errors I can find in the text have to do with accessibility of the text itself, specifically the screen reader reading order. When I used a screen reader to read the text, the by-line at the bottom of the title page reads before the title that is at the top of the title page. This is not a problem for me, but it may be for a disabled student who depends on a screen reader.","relevance_rating":5,"relevance_review":"OER is relevant as a format, because it bypasses one of the major barriers in higher education and that is the cost of textbooks. It also allows for greater agency on the part of students who may have a voice in its content and benefit from improved learning beyond rote memorization.\r\n\r\nThe content of this OER text is timely, but not so much that it will be out of date quickly. It would be a great text to support a library science class on information literacy or OER, or as a reference for a librarian, because the chapters cited current examples and literature. Each chapter can stand alone as an essay or be combined with other resources. One of the advantages of OER is that the underlying text can remain the same, but the examples, exercises, and lessons can be updated as needed for changing interests and needs.","clarity_rating":5,"clarity_review":"This OER text is written in easily understood and accessible language and provides for adequate explanation for specialty terms within the text.","consistency_rating":5,"consistency_review":"This OER textbook is consistent in the message about the importance of open education and OER in higher education and information literacy. By using an OER textbook with the possibility of more diverse viewpoints, the students are not limited to information in a traditional textbook. The students have the opportunity for improved learning, learn how to create content, and gain invaluable information literacy skills.","modularity_rating":5,"modularity_review":"This OER text can easily be broken up into smaller parts that stand on their own. However, the combination of chapters provides readers with a unique blend of viewpoints and stories about OER and information literacy.","organization_rating":5,"organization_review":"The text is divided into sections: 1) Foundations (chapters 1 thru 3), 2) Teaching Info Lit with OER (chapters 4 thru 6), Part 3 Librarian Support of Open Pedagogy / OER (chapters 7 thru 10), Part 4 Social Justice / Untold Stories (Chapters 11 and 12), Part 5 Student Advocacy (Chapters 13 and 14), and Part 6 Spring the Love: Training Future Advocates and Practitioners (Chapters 15 thru 17). The divisions of the sections make sense in the overall context and are progressive, beginning with chapter 1, which provides an introduction to OER and open pedagogy for readers who may not be familiar with the concepts, and ends with a section on training future OER advocates and practitioners. The forward does accurately state that some chapters could have fit into more than one of the sections of the text. The authors also talk about Creative Commons licensing, sites for accessing OER, and criteria to use in evaluating OER for class use.","interface_rating":4,"interface_review":"The text is mostly free of significant interface issues, including distortion of images and charts. However, some of the text did not render correctly, as some lines of text are missing either the top or bottom half of the line. The text is still readable, though. An example is on page 39, third line from the bottom of the page. The other interface issue I noticed is accessibility. The PDF is mostly accessible, but the screen reader reading order is incorrect. I also did an accessibility check of the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro and 3 minor issues came up. The headlines for each chapter are in a sans serif font, but the chapter text appears to be Times New Roman, which can be problematic for some screen readers.","grammatical_rating":5,"grammatical_review":"The text contains no known grammatical errors.","cultural_rating":5,"cultural_review":"I found reading this OER text with differing perspectives on OER and information literacy to be a breath of fresh air. Adopting OER in higher education serves to reduce the students’ costs for textbooks as well as expand opportunities for improved learning and engagement with the coursework. In addition, faculty adopting OER have more freedom to assemble a more diverse array of materials to support the course that utilizing a traditional textbook.","overall_rating":9,"overall_review":"Overall, I feel like this book is a comprehensive overview of many of the issues in OER and higher education. If you are passionate about information literacy or OER, then this book is for you. However, a quick accessibility check in Adobe Acrobat Pro revealed a few minor problems, but the bigger problem was the screen reader reading order is not logical. However, overall, this OER text would make an invaluable addition to academic library collections or for librarians teaching information literacy or involved in OER at their institutions.","created_at":"2023-01-12T15:19:44.000-06:00","updated_at":"2023-01-12T15:19:44.000-06:00"},{"id":34557,"first_name":"Barbara","last_name":"Lovato","position":"Principal Lecturer III / Library Director","institution_name":"University of New Mexico","comprehensiveness_rating":4,"comprehensiveness_review":"This OER text about OER and Information Literacy is timely and comprehensive. Through the lens of different authors for each chapter, the subject is covered effectively. There are no obvious biases or errors present.","relevance_rating":5,"relevance_review":"Open Educational Resources and the ACRL Information Literacy standards are extremely timely and relevant topics. Additionally it provides examples of the implementation of open pedagogy, content creation and collaboration among others.","modularity_rating":5,"modularity_review":"This text provides a overview at OER and Information Literacy and has chapters grouped into sections by topic. It can be easily be broken into individual chapters or grouped differently based on areas of interest or course focus.","organization_rating":5,"organization_review":"This first chapter of this text provided a good background on the concepts that will be presented in subsequent chapters. Not only does it achieve this, but it does so in a manner that is engaging and covers bases that one might not have previously considered.","accuracy_rating":5,"accuracy_review":"All of the information is well researched and comprehensively sourced. I appreciated the inclusion of an endnotes and bibliography at the end of each chapter, particularly the fact that the links provided all appear to jump directly to the appropriate source.","relevance_rating":5,"relevance_review":"I can imagine the relevance of this textbook carrying long into the 21st century and beyond. Discovering and identifying the connection between OERs and information literacy is an integral step into information justice and a hopefully provides a hopeful glimpse into a more equitable and accurate information superhighway for the human race, particularly in the age AI chatbots and a lack of accountability for providing fair and accurate information.","clarity_rating":5,"clarity_review":"Though, as others have mentioned, the text lacks a glossary, it does a good job of defining and redefining words and acronyms along the way. The use of story within creating a more definitive framework also provides a clearer picture of the importance of OERs and the critical intersection of those within information literacy. ","consistency_rating":5,"consistency_review":"Despite the variety of different voices, the text does a fabulous job of reading as though it were written by a single author. ","modularity_rating":5,"modularity_review":"With 6 clear sections, and a good division of chapters within each (2-4), the text provides a good makeup for a full course worth of instruction. Utilizing this as the sole resource in a library course or a college success course could provide a new channel for student growth and comprehensive research patterns within even the newest community college student. Chapter 11 on Critical Librarianship alone, should be required reading for MLS and MLIS students today.","organization_rating":4,"organization_review":"As mentioned above, the 6 sections are clear, and the accompanying chapters all take unique pathways to contributing to the greater whole. That being said, the organization of the book could be described a bit more clearly at the beginning, and the section names should be a bit more clear as well. This would help with accessibility of the text too.","interface_rating":3,"interface_review":"I did not experience any trouble interfacing with the text. I do think having easier quick navigation points throughout would make the 400 plus page book a more enjoyable reading experience. Additionally, I think the book could use an accessibility refresh, as I do not believe a person using a screen reader would have an easy time navigating this book.","grammatical_rating":5,"grammatical_review":"I did not encounter any grammatical errors as a part of my review.","cultural_rating":5,"cultural_review":"Today, factual information can be perceived as political, so it is always difficult to say with certainty. Wearing my librarian hat, I’ve found this information to be refreshing, particularly as someone working in a community college with a student body often having to make choices of whether to buy a textbook or groceries, I would much rather have my students be fed, and continue to have access to everything they need to be successful in their education. This book goes into vivid detail as to why that is important and how to accomplish that.","overall_rating":9,"overall_review":"As previously mentioned, the text is a joy to read. I could see many students diving into the world of information justice with this a primer. I will be sharing this resource with my colleagues, and now aim to advocate for the use of OERs all over my college. I would like to advocate for accessibility in all texts, so the interface improvements to be made here could really be made for most collegiate materials in circulation today. Not long after we began collaborating and presenting together at conferences, we were invited to draft a chapter on critical race theory (CRT) in academic libraries. An invited chapter is, of course, very flattering, so we proceeded without much thought to who the publisher would be. Angela had been working on social justice issues for a while at that point, while CJ had a wealth of expertise on open educational resources (OER). We merged our two areas of expertise in drafting that chapter, discussing OER as an opportunity to not only save students money but incorporate CRT into the curriculum—both in content and in practice. We submitted the final draft and were dismayed when we received the publication agreement. The publisher was unwilling to allow us to retain the copyright, even after we shared the licensing agreement that the Association of College \u0026 Research Libraries (ACRL) Press uses as an example. In discussing how to proceed—should we submit this chapter somewhere else?—we realized that we were really excited about extending the discussion of OER beyond just ensuring that all students can afford to access their course materials. So we pitched the idea of an edited volume on this topic to a publisher that we know has publishing practices we support (chapter authors retain copyright and select the Creative Commons license they prefer for their work), and here we are! Our entrance to academic work on social justice was through a focus on CRT. We outline this background here but wish to emphasize that it explicitly addresses only one aspect of social justice. For us, the structural understanding of racism in the United States creates a foundation upon which to understand other structures of oppression as well as intersectionality.","contributors":[{"id":5927,"contribution":"Author","primary":true,"corporate":false,"title":null,"first_name":"Kevin","middle_name":null,"last_name":"Adams","location":"Alfred, NY","background_text":"Kevin Adams is an information literacy librarian at Alfred University. But even though “organizing” is a fundamental and ubiquitous challenge, when we compare these activities their contrasts are more apparent than their commonalities. We propose to unify many perspectives about organizing with the concept of an Organizing System, defined as an intentionally arranged collection of resources and the interactions they support. Every Organizing System involves a collection of resources, a choice of properties or principles used to describe and arrange resources, and ways of supporting interactions with resources. By comparing and contrasting how these activities take place in different contexts and domains, we can identify patterns of organizing. We can create a discipline of organizing in a disciplined way. The 4th edition builds a bridge between organizing and data science. It reframes descriptive statistics as organizing techniques, expands the treatment of classification to include computational methods, and incorporates many new examples of data-driven resource selection, organization, maintenance, and personalization. It introduces a new “data science” category of discipline-specific content, both in the chapter text and in endnotes, marked with [DS] in editions that contain endnotes.","contributors":[{"id":5283,"contribution":"Author","primary":false,"corporate":false,"title":null,"first_name":"Robert","middle_name":"J.","last_name":"Glushko","location":null,"background_text":"Bob Glushko is an Adjunct Full Professor at the University of California at Berkeley in the Cognitive Science Program, which he joined in 2017 after fifteen years at the School of Information. From a traditional standpoint the abstract definition of resources to be organized, without enough corresponding attention to the more granular aspects of the discipline of organizing, renders it approachable but not foundational.","clarity_rating":4,"clarity_review":"Although the Svenonius (2000) quotes provide a good framework, her ability to translate complex and philosophical themes into practical applications for examples is not achieved due to too much use of technical terms without sufficient explanation. The emphasis on open education in this book is on contextualising resources, supporting student agency and fostering self-directed learning specifically within a South African milieu. The envisaged chapters cover conceptual and review research and empirical work focussing on open educational practices and the use of renewable assessments. The work starts off with an overview of an institutional-wide open education project that prompted the research followed by research on open education in terms of various modules in the health science, music education, law, philosophy, dietetics, anthropology, French language learning, journalism and political science. There is a clear gap in the literature on open education in terms of open educational practices, specifically in terms of contextualising resources, supporting student agency and fostering self-directed learning in a South African context. Despite the existence of some general works on open education in terms of policy, social justice and open textbooks, this book will be unique in exploring the intersections of openness, specifically with contextualisation, student agency and self-directedness.","contributors":[{"id":6131,"contribution":"Editor","primary":true,"corporate":false,"title":null,"first_name":"Jako","middle_name":null,"last_name":"Olivier","location":"Mahikeng, South Africa.","background_text":"Jako Olivier, Research Unit Self-Directed Learning, Faculty of Education, NorthWest University, Mahikeng, South Africa."},{"id":6132,"contribution":"Editor","primary":false,"corporate":false,"title":null,"first_name":"Charlene","middle_name":null,"last_name":"du Toit-Brits","location":"Potchefstroom, South Africa","background_text":"Charlene du Toit-Brits, Research Unit Self-Directed Learning, Faculty of Education, North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa."},{"id":6133,"contribution":"Editor","primary":false,"corporate":false,"title":null,"first_name":"Byron","middle_name":"J.","last_name":"Bunt","location":"Vanderbijlpark, South Africa","background_text":"Byron J. Learning objectives, a “Pause and Reflect” list of questions, and an “Action Plan” component are included in the subsections to deepen involvement with the information presented and help implement content.\r\nAt 89 pages in length, this text is easy to engage with and written to be thought provoking about centering students and incorporating equitable practices. I believe it could be particularly helpful for a multidisciplinary or multicultural team that is considering creating an OER. It also links to other relevant OER textbooks.","accuracy_rating":5,"accuracy_review":"The content appears to be accurate, error-free and unbiased, with timely resources referenced within each section. It consistently asks the reader to think about the implications of decisions that are percolating or may have already been made and to revise those decisions in light of viewing the project through the lens of inclusion and equity.
